We were threatened with up to 20 years in prison for our solidarity actions. But we weren’t intimidated and proved in court that solidarity is not a crime!
Despite the trial ending in an acquittal, our fight continues.
However, this victory came at a great cost. We spent over 800,000 euros on our exceptional team of lawyers, advisors, and technicians who provided analysis and forensic investigation. We have travelled to more than 40 hearings in Trapani, Sicily, and have provided important media work to shape and influence this political trial. Participation in countless events and demonstrations, along with the solidarity and support of others caught up in similar proceedings, was vital to our cause. The proceedings against the IUVENTA crew were the largest and most expensive against sea rescuers, but it is not an isolated case!
We must now bear these enormous costs. The Italian state does not take political or financial responsibility for this trial. On the contrary: those responsible – from politicians to prosecutors, from Frontex to various investigating agencies – have faced no accountability, only lucrative positions.
Additionally, our ship, the IUVENTA, lies wrecked in the harbor of Trapani. It remains unclear who will bear the costs of its repair. The judge in our case has denied responsibility for this, referring us to civil proceedings that we must now conduct.

„Our forensic study aimed at assessing the allegations of the Italian authorities. The results are clear: There is no evidence of collusion between the Iuventa’s crew and smugglers.“
